The Akaliait Development Foundation (AKADEF) delivers transformative programmes aligned with its six strategic objectives. Our flagship projects preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Ateker people while addressing education, health, economic empowerment, agriculture, peacebuilding, and community development. Together, these initiatives create lasting opportunities for individuals, families, and communities across the Teso region.
School Entrepreneurship Exhibitions
This programme inspires innovation among young people by organizing entrepreneurship exhibitions in schools. Students present business ideas, compete for recognition, and receive mentorship and seed funding to transform ideas into successful enterprises. The initiative complements Uganda's competency-based education curriculum by promoting creativity and practical business skills.
Scholarships for Vulnerable Children
Education is central to community transformation. AKADEF provides scholarships that enable academically deserving children from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue tertiary and university education, helping them build brighter futures.

Community Health Camps
AKADEF organizes community health camps to improve access to quality healthcare, particularly in underserved rural communities. The camps provide preventive, promotive, and curative health services while strengthening public health awareness and referral systems. Menstrual Hygiene Initiative
The Foundation supports adolescent girls through menstrual health education and the distribution of reusable sanitary pads, helping reduce absenteeism and improve school retention. The programme also promotes local production of reusable pads as a sustainable livelihood opportunity for young women. Promoting Agribusiness & Value Addition
AKADEF supports commercial agriculture by helping farmers increase productivity, add value to agricultural products, and access regional and international markets. Preserving Virginity Among Ateker Teenage Girls (Abekoi)
This programme promotes positive cultural values that encourage girls to remain in school, make responsible life choices, and reduce teenage pregnancies. Working closely with model parents, schools, and community leaders, the initiative recognizes girls who uphold these values while providing scholarships, mentorship, and start-up support. The project seeks to revive the traditional Ateker value of chastity before marriage while empowering girls through education and personal development.
Aisa Idwe Katoto Akaliait Children's Camp
The Aisa Idwe Katoto Akaliait Children's Camp is an annual cultural programme that brings together boys and girls during school holidays to learn and celebrate Ateker traditions. The camp combines cultural education with practical life skills through storytelling, traditional cooking, entrepreneurship, language lessons, cultural history, leadership development, and mentorship. The long-term vision is to establish a dedicated cultural centre where children from across the Ateker communities in Uganda and the diaspora can gather, learn, and preserve their shared heritage.
Child Care & Vocational Centre
This project supports teenage mothers by providing safe childcare services while enabling them to return to school. The centre will also offer vocational training for women and youth in practical, income-generating skills, helping them achieve economic independence. Children affected by gender-based violence and vulnerable families will also benefit from quality care and protection.
Women Entrepreneurship Competitions
This annual competition encourages women to develop innovative business ideas and compete for seed funding, mentorship, and recognition. The initiative promotes entrepreneurship, financial independence, and economic empowerment across the seven Ateker clans.
