The Akaliait Development Foundation (AKADEF) is a charitable organization founded by Her Royal Majesty Juliet Among Emolot Atomeileng, the Akaliait (Queen) of the Teso Chiefdom. Established as part of the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) structure, the Foundation was created to strengthen the Chiefdom’s contribution to community transformation while preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Ateker people. AKADEF serves as a bridge between culture and development by implementing innovative, community-driven programmes that respond to the social, economic, educational, health, and environmental needs of communities. Our work is rooted in the belief that sustainable development is most effective when it respects cultural identity, promotes local participation, and creates opportunities for future generations.
Working alongside communities, government institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, and the private sector, AKADEF is committed to building resilient communities where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
Our Story
The Akaliait Development Foundation was established from a vision that cultural institutions can play a meaningful role in improving people’s lives beyond preserving traditions. Guided by the leadership of Her Royal Majesty, the Foundation seeks to transform the cultural influence of the Teso Chiefdom into practical development initiatives that empower individuals, strengthen families, and promote sustainable livelihoods.
By integrating traditional values with modern development approaches, AKADEF continues to promote education, women’s empowerment, youth development, health, agriculture, peacebuilding, environmental stewardship, and cultural preservation throughout the Teso region and beyond.

Our mandate is to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the Ateker people while implementing innovative development programmes that improve livelihoods, empower vulnerable populations, and contribute to sustainable social and economic development.

Why AKADEF Matters
